Passport Status Check Online: Official Passport Seva Guide (2026)

The Passport Seva portal by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has one official status-check flow, plus SMS and app options. Here's every method with the exact URLs, plus how to read each status message and when to worry.

All tracking is free. Ignore any third-party tracker charging a fee.

Method 1 — Online (web)

1. Open https://www.passportindia.gov.in 2. Click Track Application Status 3. Select Application Type — Passport / PCC / IC / GEP 4. Enter your File Number (from application receipt, 15 characters) and Date of Birth 5. Click Track Status

Status updates in near real-time as your file moves through: Application Received → Under Review → Police Verification → Printed → Dispatched → Delivered.

Method 2 — SMS

Send an SMS from any phone to 9704100100:

  • Status: `STATUS FILENUMBER` (e.g. `STATUS AB1234567890123`)
  • Reply comes within a few minutes with current stage

Standard SMS charges apply. Works even without internet.

Method 3 — mPassport Seva app

1. Install mPassport Seva (Android / iOS) 2. Tap Track Application Status 3. Enter File Number + DOB 4. Also useful for locating the nearest PSK / POPSK and fee calculator

What each status means

  • Under Review at PSK: Application submitted, being verified
  • Sent for Police Verification: SP office assigned — expect police visit in 2–3 weeks
  • Police Verification Report — Recommended / Not Recommended / Incomplete: 'Recommended' = clear; 'Incomplete' needs a call-back; 'Not Recommended' may cause rejection
  • Passport Printed: Sent to India Security Press, Nashik
  • Dispatched: Speed Post tracking number available at https://www.indiapost.gov.in
  • Delivered: Received; keep signed acknowledgement

When to worry / escalate

  • No update for 30+ days: Raise a grievance at https://portal2.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/grievance/registerGrievanceNew
  • Police verification delay: Contact your local SP office; carry passport receipt
  • Wrong details on printed passport: File a Re-issue application immediately (fee waived for MEA-side errors)
  • Speed Post stuck: Track at India Post with the consignment number in your status page

FAQs

How long does an Indian passport take?

Normal: 30–45 days (post-police verification). Tatkal: 1–3 working days (post-verification). Timelines vary by PSK workload and police verification speed.

Can I track passport without a file number?

No, the file number (on your application receipt) is mandatory. If lost, log in to passportindia.gov.in with your registered account to retrieve it.

Is passport delivered by Speed Post?

Yes, exclusively by India Post Speed Post. The tracking number appears on your status page once dispatched.

What if police verification is 'Not Recommended'?
