What to Write in a Birthday Card (Beyond 'Happy Birthday!')

The card already says 'Happy Birthday!' on the front. Writing 'happy birthday!' again inside is a wasted opportunity. The blank inside is where the actual message goes — and it doesn't have to be long. Three or four sincere lines beat a full page of generic warmth every time.

The three-line birthday card formula

For any card, any relationship, this works:

  • Line 1: something specific and warm
  • Line 2: a wish for the year ahead
  • Line 3: a sign-off that sounds like you

Example:

> Every year I think about how lucky we are that you're in this family. > Wishing you a year that's as good to you as you've been to all of us. > Love always, [name]

For a parent

  • 'You made growing up look easy — I know now that it wasn't. Happy birthday, and thank you for everything.'
  • 'The best parts of me came from you. Happy birthday, [Mom/Dad].'
  • 'Every year I understand more of what you did for us. Grateful doesn't cover it. Happy birthday.'

For a friend

  • 'Another year of being the person I text when I need to laugh. Long may it continue. Happy birthday.'
  • 'Life's better because you're in it. Happy birthday, friend.'
  • 'Wishing you a year with more of what you love and less of what you don't. Happy birthday.'

For a coworker

  • 'It's genuinely nicer to work here because you're on the team. Happy birthday!'
  • 'Wishing you a wonderful year ahead, both at work and at home. Happy birthday.'
  • 'Hope you get to log off early today. Happy birthday!'

For a partner

  • 'Every year with you is the best year yet. Happy birthday, my love.'
  • 'Getting to build a life with you is the best thing I've ever done. Happy birthday.'
  • 'You make the ordinary days feel like something. Happy birthday, [name].'

For someone you don't know well

  • 'Wishing you a wonderful birthday and a great year ahead.'
  • 'Hoping today brings you everything you love. Happy birthday.'

Simple and sincere always beats trying too hard when the relationship is new.

FAQs

What's the shortest thing you can write in a birthday card?

Two lines: one specific thing (or one warm wish) plus 'happy birthday' and your name. Length is not what makes a card feel meaningful.

Should I sign a birthday card 'Love' or 'Best'?

'Love' for family, partners, close friends. 'Best' or 'Warmly' for coworkers and acquaintances. When in doubt, match the tone of the message inside.

Is it OK to send a digital birthday card instead of a physical one?

Yes — a well-written digital card lands better than a rushed physical one. What matters is the message, not the medium.
