Masked Aadhaar vs Regular Aadhaar: What's the Difference?

If you've ever downloaded your Aadhaar, you've seen the checkbox: 'Do you want a masked Aadhaar?' Ticking it changes exactly one thing on the PDF — but that one thing is the difference between exposing your full 12-digit ID to a hotel receptionist and only sharing the last four digits.

At a glance

  • Regular e-Aadhaar: shows full 12-digit Aadhaar number (e.g. 1234-5678-9012)
  • Masked Aadhaar: shows only last 4 digits, first 8 replaced with X (e.g. XXXX-XXXX-9012)

Everything else is identical: name, photo, DOB, gender, address, QR code, digital signature from UIDAI. Both are downloaded from the same URL — https://myaadhaar.uidai.in.

When to use each

Use masked Aadhaar for:

  • Hotel check-in
  • Courier / delivery KYC
  • Coaching classes, coworking spaces, gyms
  • Private employers' background verification
  • Any place that just wants 'a photo ID'

Use regular (unmasked) Aadhaar for:

  • Bank KYC (opening new accounts)
  • Income Tax / PAN linking
  • Passport, driving licence, voter ID linking
  • Government subsidy schemes (LPG, PM Kisan, scholarships)
  • Anywhere the form explicitly says 'Aadhaar number' with 12 boxes

Is masked Aadhaar legally valid?

Yes. UIDAI has confirmed multiple times (circulars in 2018, 2022, and 2024) that a masked Aadhaar downloaded from the official portal is a valid proof of identity. The digital signature and QR code are unchanged — any offline verification tool (mAadhaar app, Aadhaar QR scanner) can still authenticate it.

The MeitY advisory of 2022 also asked private entities to stop asking for photocopies of full Aadhaar and use masked/offline verification instead.

Privacy: why masking matters

Your Aadhaar number, once leaked, cannot be changed. Data leaks from third parties have exposed millions of Aadhaar numbers over the years. Sharing the masked version:

  • Prevents the receiver from linking it to other databases
  • Reduces impersonation risk if they get hacked
  • Still lets them verify your identity via the QR code

Which is better: masked or regular Aadhaar?

Masked is safer for daily sharing with private parties. Regular is required only where the full 12-digit number is legally needed (bank KYC, tax, government schemes).

Can masked Aadhaar be verified via QR code?

Yes. The QR code on a masked Aadhaar contains the same signed demographic data and can be scanned by the mAadhaar app or any UIDAI-authorised verifier.

Do banks accept masked Aadhaar?

For opening a new account under full KYC, banks generally require the full Aadhaar. For updating an address or as one of several ID proofs, masked Aadhaar is usually acceptable — confirm with the specific bank.
